What we hope your student will experience this year:

  • taking photos of what they notice in the natural world
  • finding out what the mud behind the school can tell them about the history of the local watershed
  • learning how to take care of plants that nourish us
  • discovering what resources are available to them and how to use them
  • learning how to persevere when challenged

Why we study Earth Science?

*Nearly everything we do each day is connected in some way to the Earth

*Earth Science poses new questions about our world

*Earth Science empowers us to think globally and act locally

Homework Expectations:

Homework assignments are a crucial component of our curriculum.  Homework assignments are designed to introduce, review and/or reflect on material that has been presented in class.  As a result, the student is prepared to discuss topics more thoroughly, gaining a deeper understanding of the science concepts.

If a student does not complete the assignment on time:

·         1st trimester, the student will be expected to check in with their science teacher for 10 minutes after the school day, not during PA time.  If transportation needs to be arranged, student can check in the next day after school.

·         2nd trimester, the assignment will be accepted, for partial credit, up until that unit's final assessment.

·         3rd trimester, late assignments will not earn credit.

*Homework is posted daily on the classroom whiteboard*

Grades:

Grades are based on:

·         Making Gains in study skills, which are assessed by homework completion, data collections and scientific reading and writing.

·         Making Gains in content knowledge which is assessed by labs, homework and tests.

·         Making Gains in scientific skills, which are assessed by scientific writing, mathematical computation and lab design.

Grades are posted in a timely manner on the school grade program.  Students are encouraged to monitor their grades on a weekly basis.

Safety in the Science Room:

Because emotional and physical safety is our number one priority, responsible behavior must be demonstrated at all times in order for students to participate in class.
